Design advice from Bill Hader

A few days ago, I came across this video of Bill Hader. I wish I could remember who shared it with me.

He talks about writing but touches on a couple of topics that seem transferable and relevant to design:

  • Fail fast: find out what isn’t working while there’s still room to change direction. In design, sharing early and often can help with that. I’d add: explore wide before you go deep.
  • Giving feedback: focus on explaining what isn’t working and why. Hold off on suggesting solutions unless people specifically ask for suggestions.
  • Receiving feedback: synthesize it and reflect on it. When others suggest solutions, use your judgment instead of accepting them outright.
